ABOUT US :

Since 1992, Futerro has been a pioneer and world leader in bioplastics with the development and production of poly-lactic acid (PLA) and platform molecules (lactide and lactic acid).

PLA is a well-recognized biopolymer able to replace a large number of traditional fossil-based plastics used in applications such as thermoforming, fibers and non-woven fabrics, film and coating, injection molding, bottles, rotomolding, and 3D printing. PLA is a drop-in solution and can easily compete by itself with PS or PET or could be modified to reach other fossil-based specifications (ABS, PP, etc. depending on the targeted application), while having a much lower environmental footprint impact.

With more than 30 years of experience in the bioplastics industry, Futerro is today the second largest PLA producer with an annual capacity of 100.000 T in Asia and is planning to become the first European producer by 2028 with an annual capacity of 75.000 T in France. This new factory will cover the entire PLA life cycle:

(1) starting from certified sustainable local biomass to lactic acid, (2) polymerizing lactic acid into PLA, and (3) offering the world’s first chemical and mechanical recycling plant for PLA using the patented Loopla technology.

In a world where sustainability and environmental preservation have become major concerns, choosing carbon sources for the chemical and plastic industry is crucial. Lactic acid, lactide and polylactic acid (or PLA) are promising solutions to those challenges

PLA serves as a relevant illustration: with several sustainable attributes, it is an excellent alternative to traditional fossil-based plastics.

  • Bio-based: PLA is produced from biomass, eliminating the need for fossil-based materials.
  • Non-toxic: Lactic acid, used to produce PLA, is naturally present in the environment and in the human body. Additionally, PLA does not produce persistent microplastics and is approved for food contact.
  • Circular: PLA can be industrially composted or recycled mechanically and chemically.
  • Low carbon footprint: PLA’s carbon footprint is lower than that of traditional fossil-based plastics.

Futerro’s PLA covers several grades suitable for all existing applications, serving as a drop-in solution for transparent packaging, films, coatings, fibers, non-woven applications, toys, and many more.
