Located in the South-East of France, in the heart of the Alps, Grenoble-Alpes Métropole is a local authority covering 49 municipalities and nearly 450,000 inhabitants. It is in charge of many public policies and services that are crucial for territorial transitions : urban planning, mobility, energy, waste management, water, social housing, environment, economic development and technology transfer.
The territory’s acute environmental awareness led to the adoption of the first French Climate, Air, Energy territorial roadmap, in 2005. The great concentration of laboratories of both private and public sectors in industries that are key to smart city development (digital industry, energy, environment, healthtech) also benefits the ecosystem on transition issues. Long term commitment of the territory in the field of transitions were rewarded this year by the choice of Grenoble as 2022 European Green Capital.
Grenoble-Alpes-Métropole is thus experimenting and implementing smart and innovative solutions for the reduction of green house gases, climate adaptation, the use of sustainable buildings and transportation means, the preservation of nature and biodiversity, innovation in environmental practices, the improvement of air quality, the reduction of noise, and the implementation of better waste and water management.

Against a backdrop of rapid climate change, France Villes et territoires Durables (“Sustainable City by France” in English) has positioned itself first and foremost as a solutions-oriented « do-tank ». It identifies, capitalises on and disseminates as widely as possible the best tools, methods, solutions and achievements to help local and regional authorities accelerate their sustainable transition and multiply the impact of their projects.
A key player in its own unique ecosystem, France Villes et territoires Durables brings together all the professional stakeholders involved in sustainable cities, in four colleges with balanced governance: leading local authorities and their associations, companies of all sizes (French groups as well as very small businesses), the State (central administration and specialised operators) and city experts (in particular national professional organisations).
Its mission is to accelerate the sustainable and resilient transformation of territories, based on the 4 levers for action – sobriety, resilience, inclusion and creativity – defined in its Manifesto for Sustainable Cities and Territories.

Nouvelle-Aquitaine is one of the French regions most impacted by climate change with an increase in temperatures of 1.4°C during the 20th century and increasingly frequent extreme climatic phenomena (floods, storms, erosion, drought …).
That being said, the Region has been engaged since 2010 in an ambitious environmental and climate transition that resulted in a roadmap named Néo Terra.
Co-constructed as a tool for collective intelligence and actions, Néo Terra sets out 11 ambitions pillars (among them the preservation of water resources and biodiversity and a sustainable urban planning) to accelerate and support this essential transformation across the entire territory.
Our 6 local companies exhibiting in SMART CITY WORLD EXPO embodie this crucial dynamic we are fostering in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Come and visit us to see the solutions and technologies we are inventing in Nouvelle-Aquitaine to cope with the challenges of climate change !
